Section of M1 becomes smart motorway

06 April 2016/Categories: Industry News

A section of the M1 has become a smart motorway as part of an effort to ease congestion and cut journey times.

£205 million has been spent on upgrading a 20-mile stretch between junctions 28 and 31.

The hard shoulder has been converted into a permanent extra lane, while speed limits will vary depending on the traffic conditions at certain times.

Emergency refuge areas can be used by motorists in the event of a breakdown on this stretch of the motorway.

Roads minister Andrew Jones believes the changes will make a "real difference" to anyone travelling between Mansfield, Chesterfield and Worksop.

"This is all part of our plans to build a road network that is fit for the future, with a record £15 billion going into improving our roads, reducing congestion and keeping Britain moving," he commented.

Mr Jones added that the upgrades along the M1 will deliver better and smoother journeys, which will in turn boost the local economy and businesses.
