STAT launched to address skills gap in transport sector

18 April 2016/Categories: Industry News

The government has launched a Strategic Transport Apprenticeship Taskforce (STAT) to group together employers as a response to the skills gap that has appeared in the transport sector.

STAT aims to support the government's initiative to treble the number of apprenticeships in the industry over the next four years.

Members of the taskforce met up for the first time on 15th April with stakeholders to share ideas on best practice and the priorities of the group.

So far, it's assumed that work will include helping the development of high-standard transport apprenticeships in client organisations and also through the supply chain.

Those who are part of STAT will also be encouraging young people to consider a career in transport that can be highly rewarding and diverse.

They will aim to challenge the stereotype of work in the sector that paints a picture of men in hard hats and hi-vis jackets, as there are a wide range of roles that appeal to people's diverse natures.

Transport minister Lord Ahmad said: "I have seen for myself the enthusiasm in young people for planes, trains and automobiles, and I am determined that the government's record investment helps transform childhood fascinations into lifelong careers."
