Railway reopens on time for Stafford and Crewe railway upgrade

Services on the West Coast Main Line through Stafford resumed today (3rd May) after work on the railway between Stafford and Crewe.

The work that took place over the bank holiday weekend was part of the £250 million railway upgrade on this line.

Over the holiday, Network Rail worked through the night to complete track, overhead line and signalling work, as part of the project to remove one of the last major bottlenecks on the West Coast Main Line.

Part of the £40 billion Railway Upgrade plan, the changes will help create capacity for additional passenger and freight services between Birmingham and Manchester, and London and the north-west, as well as improve reliability and journey times.

Martin Frobisher, route director at Network Rail, said: "This marked the culmination of four years' work, which will help provide passengers with a more reliable and better performing railway through the Stafford area."
