Greggs reports high sales and bakery closures

09 May 2016/Categories: Industry News

Bakery chain Greggs has confirmed that it is going to close three of its shops, as it posts information showing that its sales have increased.

According to the company, its sales are up by 5.7 per cent for the 18 weeks up to and including 7th May, reports Food Manufacture.

Closure of the bakeries was announced in March this year, as part of an investment plan by Greggs and the decisions will affect Sleaford, Twickenham and Edinburgh.

A spokesperson for the company said that the bakery at Twickenham will close in the final quarter quarter of this year and the Edinburgh site will cease trading in 2017.

The spokesperson continued to assure that the company realises it has a responsibility as an employer to make the changes in a way that doesn't negatively affect the staff of Greggs.

Although the bakery will be making people redundant, Greggs intends to invest money in developing its supply chain network over the next five years to "create centres of excellence serving our growing shop estate".
