Investment in railway improvements continues over bank holiday

17 May 2016/Categories: Industry News

Upgrades to Britain's railway are set to continue over the spring bank holiday weekend between 28th and 30th May.

These improvements are being done by Network Rail and its 9,000-strong staff who will be working continuously over the weekend to deliver vital elements of the company's Railway Upgrade Plan.

It is aiming to provide a bigger, better and more reliable railway network for passengers and businesses across the country.

Over this particular weekend a total of £30 million is going to be invested to renew track, upgrade signalling systems and help boost the capacity of the new network so that more trains can use it in future.

Passenger numbers typically drop by more than half during the bank holiday, largely as most people tend to travel by car over this time, which is why the extra work has been drafted in for this time.

Paul Clark, operations delivery manager and a member of the team who work on the railway, said: "What we're doing will make people's lives better in the long run. We're upgrading the existing railway, bringing it into the 21st century so we'll have more trains, more capacity and more frequent services."
