Winners of rail tourism competition announced

25 May 2016/Categories: Industry News

Projects from to boost rail-related tourism have been announced in a million-pound competition.

The funds are being donated by the UK government and these projects, based throughout England, Wales and Scotland, will aim to create new opportunities for UK and overseas tourists, according to the Department for Transport.

It's expected that visitors who travel throughout the UK will be able to discover some hidden gems in the country's heritage and community railways.

Some of the projects submitted included extending the heritage line from Chinnor to its former terminus at Princes Risborough station.

Services on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway will be adapted for wheelchair users in Sussex and a new velorail in Kidwelly will be built to give visitors the chance to drive a train by pedal power.

Claire Perry, rail minister, said: "Thanks to this competition, 17 railways organisations right across Britain will be able to invest in promoting and boosting what they have to offer to visitors."
