Stena Line upgrades passenger ship communications

22 June 2016/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Ports, Maritime & Waterways

Stena Line has upgraded the communications systems on its passenger ships to enhance internet speed for its guests. It has upgraded VSAT connectivity and linked this to global mobile phone 3G and 4G networks and in-port WiFi. The system was deployed by Norway-based Marlink across Stena Line’s fleet of 25 ferries to enable passengers to access social media and online services.

Marlink has trebled the bandwidth available in Stena’s fleet-wide closed user group service. It enables passengers to use their own mobile devices over these ships’ WiFi networks to link to satellite communications over Sealink VSAT services. The upgrade means Stena’s fleet has direct access to significantly more bandwidth on diverse, integrated carriers. Ships that are within 3G or 4G coverage or in ports will use less VSAT capacity, which means this can be allocated to other ships over the closed user group.

Stena Line head of ship communications and systems Raimo Warkki said this allows more capacity to be prioritised for passengers. “This upgrade ensures that we meet the fast-changing needs of ferry passengers. They expect a seamless, always available connection to the internet in addition to high quality, cost-effective voice calling. Our new multiband service from Marlink allows us to deliver the experience our passengers want.
