Humanitarian emergencies can happen anywhere and anytime, and logistics is key for the delivery of humanitarian aid. With climate change causing catastrophic weather events and geopolitical upheavals leading to humanitarian crises, there is a rising need for humanitarian logistics. Since logisticians are essential to the distribution of humanitarian relief, knowledge of their work should be shared.
In February 2023, Türkiye was struck by two powerful earthquakes that claimed over 50,000 lives and created a significant humanitarian logistics crisis. The significance of logistics was well appreciated once again, and many lessons emerged to be learnt. While theoretical discussions help us increase our knowledge about humanitarian logistics, there is a need for practitioners to share their first-hand experiences with other logisticians and policy makers. Our distinguished speakers, Oruç Kaya, the founder of O2 Logistics & Deportak, and Senol Ibis, the founder of Sigma Logistics, have both been actively involved in the field responding to earthquakes in Türkiye. In this session, moderated by Dr Gokcay Balci from University of Bradford, they will share their first-hand experiences, providing insights into the challenges faced, strategies employed, and the impact of effective humanitarian logistics on saving lives and rebuilding communities. This session promises an opportunity to gain practical knowledge and learn from real-world scenarios in humanitarian logistics. The event will include presentations of speakers and Q&A at the end.
