Description: When: 11 March 2024, 18:00 - 19:00 Where: Zoom Webinar Speaker: Helene Rossiter, Head of Historical Railways Estate, National Highways
This is joint event with ICE.
The Historical Railways Estate (HRE) comprises over 3,100 structures—bridges, viaducts, tunnels and other works—associated with former railways in Great Britain that are owned by the Department for Transport and managed by National Highways, who are funded only to maintain them in a safe condition but have worked with other organisations to restore and repurpose them where possible.
Hélène Rossiter, Head of the Historical Railways Estate will tell us how they have countered criticism of their stewardship by delivering successful schemes, including Castlefield Viaduct in Manchester which the National Trust is turning into a linear park. and the award-winning restoration of Westfield Viaduct in West Lothian. Proposals are now reviewed by the company's Stakeholder Advisory Forum which includes representatives from the Department for Transport, Sustrans, Railway Paths Ltd, the Railway Heritage Trust, the HRE Group, the Heritage Railway Association, Natural England, Historic England (also representing Cadw), Historic Scotland and ADEPT.
