Description: When: Tuesday 19 April 2016, 1800 for 1815 - 2000 Where: Room 402, Babbage Building, James Street, Plymouth University, PL4 8AA
Speaker: Alex Carter CMILT, Managing Director, First South West. The South West is a challenging region for bus operations, with pockets of intensive urban areas, often separated by sparse countryside. The holiday season brings extra custom in the form of holidaymakers, but accompanied by extra traffic congestion, which can affect reliability. Alex Carter has managed the region for First Group through recent turbulent years. This has included responding to the unprecendented challenge of the overnight collapse of a major Cornish competitor and establishing a new network in its place; disposing of the loss making operations in Plymouth and Devon; and introducing local identities in Somerset and Cornwall. Taking a lively approach to competition and simplified fares, this rejuvenation of First's offering suggests an optimistic response to the trend of earlier decline. Alex will describe his philosophy, his achievements and share his plans for the future. This promises to be a lively and rare opportunity to hear from an experienced bus manager at the threshold of a new era for services in the West Country.
