New mega chiller cools down London’s toastiest tube stations

17 August 2016/Categories: Industry News

Transport for London is trying to help tube passengers beat the heat this summer with a raft of cool new measures.

A powerful new fan chiller has been installed between Blackhorse Road and Walthamstow Central stations on the northern part of the Victoria line, reducing temperatures on the platform and in the tunnel by up to three degrees c.

The fan, which can move 33 double-decker buses worth of cold air every minute, draws in fresh air from street through coils which have chilled water flowing through them.

The approach was successfully implemented in 2012 at the Green Park and Oxford Circus stations, and Walthamstow, which considered one of the toastiest stations on the Victoria Line, is expected to become much more comfortable for passengers now.

Further cooling measures introduced include new air conditions trains on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, which will cover 40 per cent of the network by the end of 2016.

The capacity of the station ventilation fan network has also been doubled in addition to the restoration of 83 fans.

Portable fans have been installed on ticket and concourse areas too, in a bid to increase air circulation at certain stations.

Mark Evers, the Underground’s director of customer strategy, says the company is always looking for way to control temperatures during the summer months.

“Projects like the installation of this fan system demonstrates how we are using innovation to develop new ways to cool the Tube and make customers' journeys better,” he commented.
