6 in 10 would fly less to tackle climate change

26 September 2016/Categories: Industry News

Six in ten people would be willing to fly less over the coming year to help tackle climate change.

A poll of 2,089 people conducted by conservation charity WWF also found that two-thirds (67 per cent) would be happy to pay extra to ‘offset’ the pollution caused by their European return flights.

It costs less than £5 per person to offset the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced during a typical European flight, according to WWF-UK chief executive David Nussbaum.

He suggested using greener methods like rail or videoconferencing, before adding: “The most straightforward way to reduce emissions from aviation is to fly less, so it is encouraging that 60 per cent of Britons are prepared to do just that.”

According to the Air Transport Action Group, aviation accounts for 12 per cent of CO2 emissions from transport sources, with flights producing 781 million tonnes of CO2 in 2015.

WWF hopes that the findings will pile pressure on the aviation industry and governments to find solutions to the pollution caused by flights, ahead of a meeting on the issue.

Almost half (49 per cent) of those surveyed by the charity were prepared to eat less meat, while 47 per cent would cut down on how much they used their car. Seven in ten said they’d be prepared to buy fewer new gadgets.
