CILT’s profile and influence on evolving Brexit negotiating priorities continues to increase. Along with ongoing membership of the Treasury JCCC and HM Government’s Logistics Border Planning Steering Group, guidance has been sought directly by the Common’s Transport Select Committee. With a number of Brexit related Bills currently passing through Parliament, CILT is working to influence and guide the debate surrounding and understanding of the impact of proposals on the sector.
In this context and following the Prime Ministers speech earlier this month, CILT has produced a briefing paper which explores:
- The potential at-the-border frictions and barriers to UK-EU27 trade that may arise outside the customs union
- The arrangements currently in place at the EU’s external borders
- The extent to which trade frictions can be mitigated through technology, information-sharing etc.
- The proposals made by the UK Government in its “Future Partnership Paper” on customs and its “Position Paper” on Northern Ireland and Ireland, and their consistency with other stated negotiating objectives
It is hoped that this paper, along with our wider work, will help ensure a frictionless border regardless of the outcome of ongoing negotiations.
Daniel Parker-Klein, CILT’s Head of Policy said, “CILT’s influence in the public policy arena continues to increase. Through our pivotal role on government steering groups, and direct engagement with officials and politicians, a recognition of the value of our non-partisan and expert guidance is growing in the crucial Brexit sphere and beyond.”
