Sheffield HS2 station vision revealed

23 May 2018/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Freight Forwarding, Rail, Transport Planning

Sheffield City Council has revealed a vision of how its new HS2 station might look.

The image forms part of the Sheffield City Centre Plan, which is intended to cover development in the city until 2028.

A consultation has been launched, and Cllr Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment, is keen to hear from as many businesses, residents and others with an interest in the city as possible.

The plan, developed by the local authority in collaboration with key stakeholders, includes an initial sketch of how a new HS2 station link could help transform the Sheaf Valley, and sets out a new vision for the city centre over the next five to 10 years.

Included in the proposals is an action plan setting out priorities and choices about how the council intends to deliver its plans and who will be responsible.

Iqbal explained: “We want to expand the city’s business districts towards the HS2 station and knowledge gateway, and grow the six emerging living communities mainly on the western side of the city centre.

“We’ve also presented a vision for how a new HS2 station might look and how that might link to our other transport networks, helping to achieve our target of a zero-carbon city by 2050.”

Commenting on the consultation, Iqbal said the plan offers a huge opportunity for Sheffielders to have a conversation – such as whether they are pleased with the progress that has been made, or if the city centre is delivering what they hoped it would.

“I am very much looking forward to those answers,” he added.

The City Centre Plan is part of a family of proposals to be launched by the council this year, including the Transport Vision and the Green City sustainability strategy.

The consultation will close on 17 June.
