The managing director of Network Rail’s Digital Railway, David Waboso, will retire in March.

An internal memo from chief executive Andrew Haines said that Waboso was leaving with a “fantastic legacy” and a “clear direction for delivery through CP6 and beyond.”

Responsible for projects including boosting the use of digital signalling and train control technologies through the Digital Railway Programme, Waboso joined Network Rail in 2016, replacing the retiring Jerry England after working as an engineering director for London Underground.

During this time he received a CBE for his services to transport in the capital and his central role in leading the Underground’s largest ever upgrade, the Jubilee Line extension. Back in 2016, RTM spoke with Waboso about his then-current work as capital programmes director at the London Underground.

In June last year, Waboso spoke to RTM about the importance of striking a balance between new lines and modern technologies to deliver the capacity and efficiency the industry is yearning for.

A further announcement on the transitional arrangements and his replacement will be made in due course.

Once a maths teacher, Waboso has held senior positions at the Strategic Rail Authority, The Nicholas Group, and Bechtel Corporation, and is currently the president of the Association for Project Management.

Last month, Network Rail announced the first major contracts of CP6, worth a combined £645m, following a set of multibillion-pound contracts for renewals and enhancements for the south of England.
