Luton Airport enjoys busiest ever March as passenger numbers swell to over 1m

Luton Airport enjoyed its busiest ever March this year with 1.3m passengers, up 10.4 per cent on the same month last year.

The airport anticipates it will welcome over 210,000 passengers over the Easter weekend, taking the total this year to 17m. Over 58,000 passengers are expected to fly through the airport on 18 April alone.

Luton Airport chief executive Alberto Martin said: “The first three months of 2019 has been a record period for LLA and passengers have been experiencing the benefits of our transformation which was completed in December. We’re predicting a record Easter with more than 210,000 passengers expected over the Easter weekend alone.”

Late last year Luton unveiled its upgraded terminal after a three-year £160m redevelopment.

The redevelopment has been the biggest in the airport’s 80-year history and has seen the terminal expanded to increase capacity in London and the south east, a task levelled to airports by the government.

The new terminal features 30 new new high street and high-end stores including Hugo Boss, Chanel and Oliver Bonas, as well as 1,000 more seats and free wifi. It also contains a new dual carriageway, bus interchange and multi-storey car park.

The redevelopment will allow the airport to increase its annual capacity by 50 per cent to 18m passengers by 2020. Passenger numbers have already increased by 35 per cent since work began in 2015.
