HMRC is keen to engage with manufacturers of transport packaging, in particular pallet wrap manufacturers, to have their say on the Plastic Packaging Tax policy design.
At the Budget 2020, the government announced key decisions it has taken for the design of the Plastic Packaging Tax which is due to be introduced in April 2022, and will apply to all plastic packaging manufactured in or imported into the UK which contains less than 30% recycled content. It will be charged at a rate of £200/tonne.
If you are a manufacturer of plastic packaging in the UK or an importer of plastic packaging into the UK you may be affected by the tax. You can find out more information about how the tax might affect you in the consultation document. This includes proposals about who pays the tax, exactly what sorts of packaging the tax is paid on (including the treatment of transport packaging), and how exported plastic packaging could be relieved from the tax. The current design of the tax also has implications for users of plastic packaging and we would encourage members to read and/or raise this internally within your organisation. To read the consultation and submit a response, please visit GOV.UK. The consultation closes on 20 August 2020.
We would ask that if you are willing to engage in dialogue through CILT that you contact us: policy@ciltuk.org.uk
