Community minibus fund awarded

26 March 2015/Categories: Industry News

The Department for Transport (DfT) has chosen over 300 communities that will receive a share of its £25 million minibus fund. This money is aimed at helping the elderly and those with limited movement by providing accessible transport, particularly in areas without a commercial bus service.

The buses can help people access a variety of services, such as social events, medical care or local shops.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “I know first-hand how important transport providers like these can be to keep rural areas alive and protect the independence of local residents.”

He added: “We have had an overwhelming response, which demonstrates the importance of this fund, and I am keen to support similar schemes in the future.”

Each successful bidder will receive a minibus that can seat between nine and 16 passengers. Where relevant, the vehicle will be tailored to the needs of the community, which could include adapted seating or disabled access.
