The government’s levy on foreign HGVs has raised over £44 million in the year since it was introduced, Department for Transport (DfT) figures have revealed.
Overall, 98 per cent of HGVs paid for the band G levy, which is the most expensive at £10 per day or £1,000 per year.
So far, more than 1.8 million levies, which are a temporary permit to ensure foreign vehicles contribute to the upkeep of the country’s roads, have been purchased by HGVs from outside the UK. The toll applies to all HGVs over 12 tonnes in weight.
Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “This levy is supported by the British haulage industry and has levelled the playing field for operators.”
Those who fail to buy the permit are liable for on-the-spot fines of £300, which have generated £750,000 in revenue over the last year.
For UK HGVs, the levy is paid either annually or once every six months, and is charged alongside Vehicle Excise Duty.
