Station improvement fund announced

13 March 2015/Categories: Industry News

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a new fund that will be used to transform railway stations across the UK, thanks to the previous success of a similar scheme.

Rail operators and councils will be able to bid for part of the £60 million pot until the end of May. After this, winners will be chosen and funds distributed by Network Rail by the end of the year.

Chancellor George Osborne said: “It’s great that today we can confirm that extra funding for stations will continue into a second phase. This funding scheme has enabled a number of improvements like ticket gating and regenerated commercial space which have greatly improved passengers’ experiences at railway stations across the country.”
Since it was launched in 2011, the previous £100 million funding has been allocated to 45 UK stations, including Stockport, which used £4.3 million to build a 1,000-space multi-storey car park.
