TfL targets illegal minicabs

27 February 2015/Categories: Industry News

Transport for London (TfL) has reported on the impact of its Safer Travel at Night (STaN) campaign, which was tailored to have maximum impact on illegal minicabs in the city.

Over 8,000 arrests for touting and similar offences have been made since 2003. As a result, only 16 per cent of women between 16 and 44 were approached by touts after a night out in 2014, as opposed to 66 per cent in 2003.

TfL collaborated with the Metropolitan Police, the British Transport Police and the City of London Police to provide 68 dedicated police cab enforcement officers, 41 TfL compliance officers and 32 vehicle inspection staff. Their efforts were focused on the Christmas season and the start of the university year.
Siwan Hayward, TfL's deputy director of enforcement and on-street operations, said: “The safety and security of the travelling public is a priority for us. We want everyone who uses a minicab to ensure it is pre-booked through a licensed operator.”
