The restoration of Chiswick Bridge in West London is now over 90 per cent complete, Transport for London (TfL) has announced.
The work is expected to be finished in time for the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in May. In previous years, the bridge has provided an excellent viewing position of the finish line, so this will be pleasing to fans of the events.
Since Chiswick Bridge is a Grade II-listed structure, the repairs have been painstaking carried out to maintain its integrity. For example, where stonework could not be mended, replacement blocks were obtained from the same quarry that provided the original Portland stone during construction in the 1930s.
The next part of the work will involve waterproofing the bridge’s footpath. This will mean that the bridge is closed to road traffic on March 7th, February 21st and 28th, although pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use one of the footpaths.
