With the Met Office predicting severe cold and snow to last until February 3rd, Transport for London (TfL) has published details of its plans to work with local authorities and the emergency services to keep the capital moving.
Over 110,000 tonnes of road salt has been stockpiled to keep roads passable. There is also 28,000 tonnes available in the pan-London Strategic Salt Reserve, which has not been called upon for three years. Lines of communication are also in place to allow councils to share salt reserves if one experiences a shortage.
Regular de-icing of trains and salting of platforms is planned to maintain services on the Underground network and local rail services. Machinery will be regularly checked throughout the day to ensure that it is not adversely affected by the weather.
Leon Daniels, TfL’s managing director of surface transport, said: “We have done everything possible to ensure that, should harsh weather conditions hit, we have well rehearsed procedures in place to minimise the consequences.”
