All the remaining crew of the Hoegh Osaka, which was deliberately grounded on Bramble Bank at the entrance to Southampton Water, have been rescued.
The 51,000 tonne ship begin to list badly soon after it left Southampton en route to Germany. The decision was taken to run it aground to avoid a potentially catastrophic capsize. The cause of the listing is still unknown, although the operator is investigating.
The 25 crew on board were taken to safety by helicopters and lifeboats. One was taken to hospital, although their injuries are not said to be life-threatening.
Bramble Bank is a sandbank that moves according to the tides. It becomes an island for about an hour during a spring tide.
The vessel’s owner, Hoegh Autoliners, is currently debating how to refloat the vessel without causing disruption to the busy shipping lanes near the Port of Southampton.
For the present, the ship remains grounded, listing by 45 degrees. There has been no oil spillage, and the crew said it was not taking on water.
