The Custom House Crossrail station is now nearly half-finished, according to Crossrail.
This follows the installation of 34 metre bridge to connect the station with ExCel London. The Custom House station is set to open in 2018.
The 90 tonne bridge was lowered into place in three sections. The process required two cranes, with a combined weight of nearly 1,000 tonnes.
However, the bridge had already taken a big journey of its own. It was built in sections in Dublin, then painted in Cheshire. It travelled to London with a police escort, before finally being installed.
A similar approach has been adopted for other aspects of the station. Many parts are made in sections at contractor Laing O’Rourke’s Sheffield factory, before being transported 130 miles south to Custom House for assembly and installation.
Mujahid Khalid, project manager for Custom House said: “Installing this huge bridge was a vital part of our construction programme here at Custom House. The new station is rapidly taking shape.”
