Oyster users encouraged to become organ donors

10 November 2014/Categories: Industry News

London transport users applying for Oyster cards are to be given the chance to become organ donors.

A direct link will be provided on the Oyster Online page, enabling those using the site to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

People applying for a passport or filing a tax return are also being prompted to help others by signing up to become a donor.

Over 600,000 people have clicked through to the donation register since the trial began on the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency website in January 2013.

A government spokesman said: "The Transport for London website provides a great opportunity to reach people living in the capital."

Grant Shapps, the cabinet office minister, stated that a shortage of organs leads to three unnecessary deaths every day and these could be prevented by encouraging more people to become donors.
