Minister of state for transport John Hayes has recently visited the A14 improvement works to see how the scheme will improve passenger and freight transport.
The A14, which links Britain's busiest port - Felixtowe - with the West Midlands and Cambridge, carries 62,000 vehicles a day. Many of these are heavy goods vehicles moving freight inland.
Improvements at the Girton to Histon pinch point are expected to help cut down on congestion and improve road journeys for thousands of road users every day.
Speaking about his visit, Mr Hayes pointed out that Britain's long history as a nautical powerhouse is still important today - especially since the maritime sector generates more than £8 billion for the economy each year.
"Our ports have weathered the economic storm of recent years better than many parts of the economy and I fully appreciate the importance of Felixtowe in delivering long-term growth," he explained, adding that improving the A14 is a priority infrastructure project due to its links with the port.
