Glowing cycle lanes 'could be used in UK'

28 October 2014/Categories: Industry News

Glow-in-the-dark cycle lanes that have been installed in the Netherlands have been proposed as "smart highway" features that could be introduced in the UK.

Special green paint that is charged by daylight is used on Route 66 of the Future and is designed to be clearer than existing cat's eye reflective spheres, BBC News reports.

Glow-in-the-dark cycle lanes are also due to be tested by the creators and these have already attracted the interest of UK planners.

Artist Daan Roosegaarde, one of the road markings' designers, said the UK would be well-placed to install his cycle highway, owing to its tradition of blending craftsmanship and function.

"For a small country like the Netherlands, we have to be creative - that is how we will survive. I won't say what the UK should and shouldn't do but I can see similarities," he stated.
