An extension of the Bakerloo line is essential for the continued growth of South London, the city's mayor has claimed.

Boris Johnson is pushing for the development of the line and has launched a public consultation on the issue.

Improvements to rail infrastructure would deliver quicker, more direct journeys into central London and help to deal with overcrowding problems on many of the National Rail services into London Bridge. 

With London's population forecast to reach ten million by 2030, measures need to be put in place to deal with the increased pressure this will place on public transport. 

"An extension of the Bakerloo ... would provide a vital new transport link for the people of south London and help to spur jobs, new homes and regeneration in this part of the capital," Mr Johnson stated. 

He added capacity on national rail lines could also be freed up by the measures, while they will also ensure London can stay competitive and successful.

The cost of the expansion is estimated to be £3 billion and the consultation on the proposals will run until December 30th.
