Transport minister Claire Perry has challenged the rail industry to find more seats for commuters on daily services across the UK. 

This comes after the Department for Transport (DfT) released latest statistics investigating growing issues of overcrowding aboard national rail services. 

Whilst the level of crowding remains the same in some areas the figures highlight that the issue has worsened in cities, due to a rise in the number of commuters. 

Aside from London the city with the highest number of passengers is Birmingham, with 39,000 people commuting into the city each morning. 

Manchester ranked third with 30,000 commuters and Leeds fourth at 24,000. 

Speaking about the results, Ms Perry said: "We are investing more than than £38 billion in our railway delivering more trains, more seats and more services. We are pushing ahead with plans for a national high speed rail network that will help solve the problem in the long term."
