In 2017, the government asked the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) to make recommendations on how to ensure an efficient, low-carbon freight system.
Its response to the ensuing 2019 report, Better delivery: a challenge for freight, sets out its position on the recommendations.
The response also announces the government’s intention to form a partnership with the freight industry to create a ‘future of freight’ strategic plan with a cross-modal focus.
The long-term plan will build on the work of the NIC and address wider and emerging challenges and opportunities, such as the government’s new relationship with the European Union and lessons learned during COVID-19 at ports and borders.
