Transport 'dominates govt construction projects'

14 August 2014/Categories: Industry News

Spending on transport projects dominates the government's construction pipeline, according to a KPMG analysis.

The total value of such schemes is £66.2 billion, accounting for 57 per cent of the forecast government investment. This includes the cost of HS2 Phase 1 and Highways Agency projects.

KPMG analysed the £116 billion forecast spend by central and local government across 1,886 projects in three periods: 2014-16, 2016-20 and 2020 and beyond.

Almost one third of the pipeline schemes are to take place in the south-east or south-west, but the organisation says the whole of England will benefit from nearly half of them.

Some 40 per cent of the initiatives are scheduled for completion before 2016, although these account for just seven per cent of the pipeline's value. A third have no specified completion date.

KPMG's UK head of infrastructure, building and construction Richard Threlfall said: "Our analysis of the UK government's construction pipeline shows the huge dominance of rail and road schemes in the government's infrastructure spend."
