The government has today (July 11th) announced that £440 million is to be invested in sustainable transport schemes across England.
Baroness Kramer unveiled the new financing, revealing that 44 new environmentally-friendly initiatives will receive the backing, £64 million of which comes from the government.
The Department of Transport has committed this amount as part of the latest round of its Local Sustainable Transport Fund. Match funding and money from the Local Growth Fund will help top up the value of the package.
"We want more people to choose to travel in a way that cuts congestion and carbon, delivering economic and environmental benefits," Ms Kramer stated.
Schemes have been selected on the basis of the environmental, health and economic benefits they will provide to communities across the country. They were required to demonstrate how they will reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and boost economic growth.
This funding is in addition to the £3 billion the government is providing for transport through the Local Growth Fund, which includes £600 million for sustainable transport.
