A new report reveals the UK's transport network is in need of attention to ensure it can withstand events such as flooding.

The Institute of Civil Engineers has published its State of the Nation: Infrastructure 2014 report rating the UK's Transport, Energy, Flood, Waste and Water networks from A to E. Transport was rated D minus or 'at risk' - the lowest grade awarded.

According to ICE, the low rating is a result of inadequate resilience to flooding and the decline in local roads maintenance following investment cuts.

The organisation argues that resilience should form part of the criteria used as a basis for making decisions on priority infrastructure projects.

A number of more detailed recommendations are made to improve the transport networks, including the extension of devolved transport powers and a programme to clear the road maintenance backlog.

"Management of the public's expectations on availability during adverse conditions" needs to form part of the improvement process, ICE vice-president Keith Clarke said.
