Cashless buses 'could leave people stranded'

25 June 2014/Categories: Industry News

Concerns have been raised that thousands of people could be left stranded when London's buses go cashless on July 6th.

Transport for London (TfL) figures reveal that on average 2,115 Oyster cards were lost, stolen or stopped working every day last year - a total of 770,000.

The London Green Party, which obtained the figures, warned that the transition to cashless buses could leave vulnerable passengers lost or stranded.

TfL claims the switch will save £24 million per year and points out that less than one per cent of journeys are now paid for using cash.

Darren Johnson, Greater London Assembly member for the Green Party, acknowledged the introduction of TfL's one more journey feature has been helpful.

"However, this doesn't deal with the common and widespread problem of people either not having a card at all, or their card suddenly not functioning," he said.

Leon Daniels, TfL's managing director of surface transport, said bus drivers are being given extra guidance to help them deal with vulnerable passengers.
