The first phase of London's buses going cashless has come into effect with the "one more journey" feature.

Passengers are able to make one more bus trip if their Oyster card has a positive balance but they do not have the funds to pay for their journey, the BBC reports.

London's buses will no longer accept cash fares from July 6th. According to Transport for London (TfL), this will reduce the delays created when boarding buses.

The decision to make the buses cashless was made following a consultation exercise launched by TfL last year, in which one-third of the 37,000 respondents said they supported the move.

Liberal Democrat London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon said the move could make night-time journeys more difficult for some groups.

"Ending cash fares might make sense on many bus routes, but I think a case for ending them on night-time bus routes has yet to be made," she said, when the measure was announced.
