The 15 per cent rise in London's congestion charge has been criticised by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), which described the increase as "unjustified".

Transport for London (TfL) announced that from June 16th, motorists entering central London will have to pay £11.50 per day, up from £10. 

Chief operating officer for surface transport at TfL Garrett Emmerson said the increase will help ensure congestion in the capital "remains effective".

But chief executive of the BVRLA Gerry Keaney called the increase "a tax rise on essential business users who have no choice but to drive in central London", adding the body is "disappointed" with the decision. 

He said the organisation will "continue to fight this battle on behalf of our members and their customers".

Users of the Auto Pay system will continue to receive a £1 discount, with the price for these customers rising to £10.50 per day.
