China outlines high-speed rail plans

09 May 2014/Categories: Industry News

Chinese officials are planning to build a high-speed rail link between Beijing and the United States, according to reports in the country's media.

The 13,000 km line would run through the north-east of the country and across Siberia before entering a 200 km tunnel under the Bering Strait. It would then resurface and head through Canada before arriving in the US.

In total, the journey would take two days, with the train travelling at an average of 350 km/h. The story has been reported in the Beijing Times.

Once completed, the section of the line running beneath the Bering Strait would be around four times the length of the Channel Tunnel.

China currently has plans to construct four international high-speed rail links. One would run from London via Paris, Berlin, Warsaw, Kiev and Moscow before continuing to China. Another would run to Singapore from the Chinese city of Kunming.
