London Underground (LU) has announced it is to spend £330 million upgrading stations across its network.
More than 20 contractors and three design firms have been selected to modernise a total of 70 transport hubs. Among those to be redeveloped are Paddington, Earls Court, South Kensington, Embankment and Charing Cross.
The project is aimed at making sure the stations are fit for a decade of use, maintaining them to a common standard so that no significant work will be needed for ten following years. Officials stated this would ensure passengers experienced fewer planned closures for remedial work.
LU will carry out the scheme using its new Stake delivery model. This is designed to reduce sub-contractor layers in the supply chain, making the construction process more efficient. Programme director for stations Miles Ashley said this approach "allows long-term engagement with the people at the workface and recognises they are the most valuable part of the team".
The upgrade is expected to take around seven years to complete.
