Sue Terpilowski OBE features on BBC World Service Radio

Public Policy Committee (PPC) Chair for CILT UK, Sue Terpilowski OBE, was recently invited on BBC World Service Radio to share insight on container shipping rates and seafarer safety in the Red Sea.

Shipping prices have surged as a result of Houthi rebels attacking ships in the Red Sea causing retailers to place Christmas orders early in an attempt to prevent supply chain issues.

According to Xeneta Shipping Index the average price of shipping a 40ft container has increased by 165% from the end of December 2023 to May 2024 as prices are currently exceeding $4,000.

Speaking to the BBC Sue explained that businesses are realising that disruption to the Red Sea route caused by Houthi attacks could last until the autumn.

"To avoid headlines 'Christmas is cancelled, there's nothing in the shops', people are now actually bringing forward their shipments."

"So they'll be here in good time allowing any eventualities that might happen while they are at sea," she said.
