DHL and Formula 1 embrace Sustainable Aviation Fuel in latest green initiative

25 September 2024/Categories: Industry News, Aviation, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain, Operations Management

DHL and Formula 1 have taken a significant step towards reducing their carbon footprint by adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air freight logistics.

The move, which began in March with cargo movements to the Australian Grand Prix, is part of DHL's GoGreen Plus service and aims to slash greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80% per flight compared to conventional aviation fuel.

This initiative marks a new chapter in the 20-year partnership between DHL and Formula 1, supporting the sport's commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2030.

Up to the Singapore Grand Prix, about 20% of Formula 1's cargo flights to races outside Europe this year have been scheduled to use the SAF-powered service.

Paul Fowler, Head of DHL Motorsports Logistics, said: "Our longstanding partnership with Formula 1 is built on a shared passion for innovation and excellence. We are committed to using our expertise to support Formula 1 in transporting cars and other equipment around the world in the most efficient way possible.

“With 40 years of expertise in motorsports logistics, we are focused on identifying ways to cut down greenhouse gas emissions and making motorsport more sustainable with every step we take.”

The adoption of SAF is the latest in a series of sustainability initiatives implemented by DHL and Formula 1.

This season, DHL has more than doubled its fleet of biofuel-powered trucks serving the European leg of the F1 season to 37, each contributing to an average greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 83% compared to diesel-driven counterparts.

The logistics giant also utilises fuel-efficient Boeing 777 aircraft, which reduce emissions by around 17% over legacy aircraft.

Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1,added: "Formula 1 has always been at the forefront of innovation, and our early stage investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a testament to our dedication to deliver on our Net Zero by 2030 commitment.

“SAF is just the latest step for the business, and underscores how alternative fuels both on and off track can materially reduce carbon emissions.

“This delivery of our sustainability strategy is only made possible through coordinated actions across our sport.”

The SAF used in Formula 1 logistics is purchased and transferred through a book and claim system, allowing buyers to acquire environmental benefits without physically possessing the fuel.

According to DHL, this system has the potential to significantly reduce the transportation sector's emissions when implemented industry-wide.

DHL's provision of SAF is also verified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC), ensuring the fuel is produced according to strict sustainability criteria.
