TfL announce new operator of the Elizabeth Line

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that GTS Rail Operations Limited will take over operations of the Elizabeth line from May 2025, following a successful bid by the joint venture between Go-Ahead Group, Tokyo Metro and Sumitomo Corporation.

The new seven-year contract, which includes an option for a two-year extension, will see GTS Rail Operations replace current operator MTR Corporation (Crossrail) Limited.

The partnership aims to blend Japanese railway expertise with British operational knowledge to enhance London's newest transport artery.

Since its launch in 2022, the Elizabeth line has transformed travel across London and the South East, carrying more than 700,000 passengers daily.

The new operator will be tasked with maintaining this success whilst preparing for future expansions, including services to Old Oak Common station, planned to open in 2030.

Among the key commitments, GTS Rail Operations will introduce 10 new Class 345 trains to accommodate growing passenger numbers across the network.

The operator has also pledged to create more than 500 apprenticeships throughout the contract term and establish a community grants programme supporting local initiatives.

Claire Mann, TfL's Chief Operating Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment and said: "The Elizabeth line has had a transformational impact since opening in 2022 and has quickly become one of the most popular and reliable railways in the country."

Go-Ahead Group's CEO Miguel Parras welcomed the partnership, adding: "We're proud to have been chosen to be TfL's partner, together with Sumitomo Corporation and Tokyo Metro, for the operation of the iconic Elizabeth line."

The new operator will focus on optimising current operations whilst maintaining safety standards and fostering collaboration with industry partners, including Network Rail and HS2, to ensure continued high-performance levels and customer satisfaction.
