Formula E are to reduce its Season 11 freight carbon emissions by 25%, saving approximately 5,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide, through an innovative partnership with DHL.
The championship will transport race equipment using only two cargo planes instead of three, achieved by reducing freight volume by over 80 tons and prioritising sea and road freight.
Formula E said this initiative supports their commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 45% by 2030.
The championship's internal tech team worked closely with partners including DHL, TATA Communications, FIA, ABB, and others to forensically audit and optimise freight transportation.
This involved finding innovative ways to procure and store equipment within race markets.
The series has become the first sport globally to commit to the British Standards Institution's Net Zero Pathway, utilising international sustainability standards.
Julia Palle, Vice President of Sustainability at Formula E, said: "We're proud to take our sustainability credentials and commitment to reducing our overall emissions to the next level."
The complex logistics strategy involves working with key partners to locally source equipment, use multiple asset sets, and leverage renewable biofuels for transportation.
Matt Page, Senior Vice President, Assurance Services EMEA at BSI noted that Formula E's achievement "underscores its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility."
The optimisation represents a significant step towards the championship's goal of pioneering sustainable racing technologies and reducing environmental impact.
