Experts predict automation & AI to be leading sector trend in 2025

22 January 2025/Categories: Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain, Operations Management

A recent Institute poll has revealed that automation and AI are expected to dominate the logistics, transport and supply chain sector in 2025.

The LinkedIn poll, which gathered 87 responses, asked participants to choose from four key sector trends.

Results showed automation and AI at 66%, last-mile delivery innovations and resilience and risk management each at 14% and decarbonisation initiatives received 7%.

The strong showing for AI and automation aligns with market projections from Statista, which forecasts the global market to exceed £600 billion by 2030.

The sector is already seeing practical applications through drones, robotics and autonomous vehicles.

Before Christmas, leading industry experts shared their insights with CILT(UK)'s Focus Magazine about the sector's upcoming challenges.

Tony Mannix FCILT, Strategic Advisor for GXO Logistics believes AI and robotics will be the most transformative technologies in the sector, he said: “The future of logistics lies in how we blend human capabilities with innovation, whether that's AI tools, robotics, or humanoids.”

“While AI is still in its early stages, its potential for optimising picking operations, transport route planning, and other aspects of logistics is tremendous.”

“However, it's crucial to remember that good data input is essential for achieving valuable outputs – these powerful tools still require human expertise to be effective.”

Jo Field, President of Women in Transport, emphasised the transformative impact of AI and said: "AI will be a big disruptor next year and in years to come. We know it is changing everything but don't yet exactly know how.

“It's important for us to make sure that we drive forward AI responsibly and inclusively, keeping humans in the loop to design the ethical outcomes we want to see—tech that works for people and delivers a positive society."

Paul Farr FCILT, Managing Director of Ground & Rail for CEVA Logistics, highlighted the dual impact of AI and sustainability.

"The continued drive for reducing carbon emissions will continue to be a disruptor for our industry and against a backdrop of AI and autonomous transport and warehouse operations," added Paul.

Emily Smith, Global Senior Product Sector Manager Logistics for Sentric Safety Group expressed her concerns around the challenges of automation and AI.

“Autonomous trucks and delivery vehicles could present potential new challenges and opportunities, particularly in terms of ensuring safety at the loading bay.

“These would include facilitating communication between vehicles and safety solutions and increasing automation at the loading bay,” explained Emily.

To address these challenges, Emily mentioned they are reviewing solutions capabilities and identifying areas to efficiently safeguard these types of vehicles.
