New taskforce to look into rail resilience in south-west

19 March 2014/Categories: Industry News

Network Rail has announced the creation of a new taskforce to look into rail resilience in the south-west.

The news comes following the recent extreme weather, which demolished part of the network between Devon and Cornwall. The group will be given the job of conducting a review into the feasibility of three potential strategies - building a second line, re-routing the main track and retaining the existing coastal route.

Network Rail will lead the group, which will also comprise of the Department for Transport, the Environment Agency, local government and train operating companies. It stated the aim of the consultation was to come up with the most viable solution to ensure the railway can be safeguarded for the next 175 years and beyond.

Paul Harwood, strategy and planning director for Network Rail, commented: "A robust railway is integral to national resilience and we are committed to keep passengers moving, every day and in every situation."

The study is expected to be completed by early summer.
