World's largest wind-powered cargo ship nears completion

04 February 2025/Categories: Industry News, Logistics & Supply Chain, Ports, Maritime & Waterways

The world's largest cargo ship to be primarily powered by sails has been launched at Turkey's RMK Marine shipyard.

The Neoliner Origin, featuring two 90m masts and 3,000 square metres of sails, is scheduled to make its maiden transatlantic voyage in summer 2025, travelling from St. Nazaire to Baltimore via St Pierre & Miquelon.

The innovative vessel, designed and operated by French company Neoline, will derive 60-70% of its propulsion power from wind. Combined with other efficiency measures, including an 11-knot cruising speed and hybrid diesel-electric power system, the ship aims to reduce carbon emissions by 80% compared to conventional vessels.

"Completing construction of our ship is just the beginning, as we will soon begin operations," said Jean Zanuttini, President at Neoline Development. "Neoline was created out of a desire to prove that we can create a different kind of shipping company; one that dramatically reduces emissions as well as delivering cargo reliably."

The 136m roll-on/roll-off vessel can transport 5,300 tonnes of cargo or 265 containers. Several major French brands have already committed to using the service, including Renault, Manitou, Hennessy, and Longchamp. The ship also features refrigerated storage capabilities and can accommodate 12 passengers during its 13-day journey.

Michel Pery, President of Neoline & Associates, said: "Throughout my career I've always thought about renewing the concept of sail cargo vessels. With this first vessel, we aim to show that it is possible to carry goods industrially while staying within planetary limits."

The vessel is currently undergoing final construction, including mast installation, with sea trials planned before its expected delivery in June 2025.
