DHL Group has partnered with renewable fuels company Neste to accelerate its decarbonisation strategy.
The partnership announced on 5 February has plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the logistics provider’s air and road transportation services.
The group said this collaboration aims to support DHL’s target of achieving net-zero emissions logistics by 2050 but with significant interim goals set for 2030.
Thes goals include electrifying two-thirds of last-mile delivery vehicles and increasing sustainable fuel usage across transportation modes to over 30%.
A key component of the agreement involves Neste supplying approximately 300,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually to DHL by 2030.
The companies will also explore using renewable diesel to further reduce road transportation emissions.
Yin Zou, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at DHL Group, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership and said: "The signing of this agreement with Neste is a significant step in our strategy to achieve net-zero-emission logistics by 2050.
“By closely collaborating with a leading producer of renewable fuels, we can further advance on our interim targets."
Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President of Commercial Renewable Products at Neste, expressed enthusiasm about supporting DHL's sustainability objectives stating: "We are looking forward to further strengthening our existing cooperation with DHL Group through a holistic, joint approach to tackling greenhouse gas emissions in transportation."
The partnership builds on previous collaborative efforts, including joint support for the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) Credit Transfer System.
This innovative system enables airlines, logistics providers, and corporate customers to credibly report emission reductions achieved through sustainable aviation fuel.
By focusing on renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, the companies said they aim to provide practical solutions for reducing carbon footprints in transportation, demonstrating a committed approach to addressing climate challenges in the logistics sector.
