Train performance data now on display at UK stations

Industry News

06 March 2025/Categories: Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Rail

Rail passengers across England can now see real-time information about how reliable their local train services are, as performance data has been made available at more than 1,700 stations from today (6 March 2025).

For the first time in British railway history, station-level data showing punctuality and cancellation rates for each operator is being displayed on digital screens at major stations.

At smaller stations, passengers can access the information by scanning QR codes.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, who visited Reading station to mark the launch, said: "Today marks the beginning of a new era of rail accountability. These displays are a step towards rebuilding trust with passengers using our railways as we continue to tackle the root causes of frustrating delays and cancellations."

The data is also available on the Office of Rail and Road's new data portal, which includes information for all stations in Great Britain and is accessible for users with screen readers.

Jacqueline Starr, Chair and Chief Executive of Rail Delivery Group, added: "We know how frustrating it is for customers when their train is cancelled or delayed.

“By being transparent with this data and the positive actions we're taking, it shows how serious the industry is in putting this right by continuing to strive for improvements.”

The initiative is part of the government's wider railway reform programme, which includes establishing Great British Railways to integrate track and train operations and implementing the Public Ownership Act.

The government claims this will save taxpayers up to £150 million annually that previously went to private shareholders, with the first services coming under public ownership as soon as May 2025.

Natasha Grice from Transport Focus said: "Passengers tell us they want a reliable, on-time train service and will welcome improvements to information about the punctuality of their service and cancellations being shared more transparently.

“It’s important that the industry uses this information to drive up performance.”
