With the support of CILT’s Novus programme, BSc Aviation Management and MSc Air Transport Management students from Coventry University had an exceptional opportunity to experience the fast-paced world of air cargo operations up close at DHL Aviation, East Midlands Airport (EMA) on Tuesday 12th November 2024.
The visit offered a unique glimpse into the sophisticated operations at one of the UK's leading logistics hubs, providing the students with invaluable first-hand insights into the import and export processes that keep global cargo moving seamlessly.
The trip began with a warm reception from the DHL Aviation EMA Hub team. The students were briefed about DHL's global operations and the state-of-the-art terminal infrastructure and processes at EMA.
Here, they learned about the advanced technology and extensive coordination required to manage the flow of goods in and out of the hub. The demonstration of automated sorting systems and the detailed explanation of safety and security measures in place were particularly enlightening.
Students were taken through the entire cargo process, observing how every item is meticulously handled, sorted, and readied for shipment.
They experienced how DHL ensures compliance with international trade regulations, which is crucial for the smooth execution of global logistics operations. The practical demonstration of these processes gave the students a clearer understanding of the theoretical concepts they study in their courses.
Moreover, the visit highlighted DHL’s commitment to sustainability. The students learned about the company’s initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact, such as carbon offsetting and the use of sustainable aviation fuels. This aspect of the tour resonated deeply with those interested in sustainable practices within the aviation sector.
The interactive nature of the tour allowed students to engage directly with professionals, asking questions and gaining deeper insights into the complexities of air cargo operations. This interaction not only enhanced their learning experience but also provided a valuable networking opportunity. The DHL team also discussed various career opportunities within aviation logistics.
A huge thank you to the DHL Aviation EMA team for hosting the students and providing this valuable, real-world experience that bridges academic learning with industry practice.
A special thanks to the CILT Novus Programme Manager, Zara Nash for supporting Coventry University in organising such a fantastic field trip. Opportunities like these are vital in preparing the next generation of aviation professionals.
This field trip was more than just a learning excursion; it was an inspirational journey into the heart of aviation logistics, illuminating the challenges and innovations that drive this industry. Let’s hear from the students who participated in this trip:
“Our visit to DHL at East Midlands Airport was a truly eye-opening experience.
