Parcel delivery company Evri is set to launch a new futuristic distribution method, introducing an autonomous robot dog to soon start helping with deliveries.
Published on April 1, many thought it may have been an April Fools' prank; however, the company was quick to dismiss such claims, confirming that their robot dog initiative called 'Walkies' is indeed real.
With a trial scheduled for summer 2025, Evri claims this is a UK first as the fully automated four-legged robot dog will work in partnership with a courier. The robot will be able to hop in and out of the courier's van and make its way to and from homes delivering parcels.
Marcus Hunter, Chief Technology Officer at Evri said: "Couriers always have and always will be the heart of our business.
"Robots will never replace them, but we are dedicated to finding new and innovative methods to support our couriers and increase the speed and convenience of the services we offer.
"In this next stage of innovation, we are thrilled to introduce both these robot delivery trials, which could provide increased flexibility and choice for consumers."
The autonomous canine has been developed by RIVR, a Swiss global innovation leader in physical AI.
Evri explained the focus of the trial is to gain insight into how the robot dogs can work with couriers to improve efficiency and support with some of the more strenuous parts of the job.
The robot dog trial is just one of several robot trials Evri is said to be conducting.
Operating out of Barnsley Business Innovation Centre, a small and light EV robot, developed by Delivers AI, is expected to soon be out daily, delivering parcels with the support of the local courier.
According to the parcel delivery company, these robots can be deployed 24 hours a day, allowing for night-time deliveries for consumers on different schedules and will support those who need more time to get to the door.
It will also offer more on-demand services with designated time slots for consumers, and they will be trialled in Barnsley over the summer, said Evri.
Councillor Robin Franklin, Barnsley Council's Cabinet spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture said: "We're incredibly proud to be hosting the trial run for this programme in Barnsley, which aligns with the ambition in our new Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy to become the UK's leading digital town.
"This is an amazing piece of innovation that could revolutionise home deliveries and we wish Evri the best of luck with the trial."
